Geoffrey Arthur Bamford was born on 15 Dec 1932 and baptised at St Werburgh's Church on 22 Jan 1933. He was the son of Henry Arthur (1899-1961) and Annie (nee Heel, 1903-1978). He was one of a large family: Evelyn (b. 1929), John (b. 1930), Charles (b. 1931), Margaret (b. 1933), Walter (b. 1935), Brian (b. 1937), Patricia (b. 1938), Kathleen (b. 1944) and David (b.1946). Brian died of pneumonia in infancy on 1938. Walter was killed, aged 4, in a road accident. In 1939, the family were living at 7 Kirkleys Avenue (now Kirkleys Avenue South), which they seem to have moved into as soon as it was built (in 1933 it was described as "No 2, Block 21, New Houses").

Henry worked variously as a labourer, “process worker”; in 1939 he was a sewage worker and an ARP warden. Before national service, Geoffrey was a fireman on the railway.

He is the first cousin, once removed of John Twigg Bamford, also on the Spondon memorial
